Read the original description
A vulnerability in the email parsing of Cisco AsyncOS Software for Cisco Secure Email Gateway could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker to execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system. This vulnerability is due to insufficient validation in the email parsing logic. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending a crafted email message that contains malicious SQL statements through an affected device. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary SQL statements, leading to command execution with root privileges on the underlying operating system.

Questions about CVE-2026-76461
What does this mean?
The flaw is an SQL injection, meaning crafted input can change the database queries the product runs. The advisory says this can execute arbitrary commands with root privileges on the underlying operating system.Source: sec.cloudapps.cisco.com
Am I affected, and how do I check?
Both physical and virtual Cisco Secure Email Gateway appliances are covered when running AsyncOS 15.5 and earlier, 16.0 before 16.0.4-302, or 16.5 before 16.5.0-780. Compare the AsyncOS release shown on the appliance with these version ranges.Source: sec.cloudapps.cisco.com
What should I do about it?
The checked facts do not name a fixed release, so no upgrade target can be confirmed from them. Check the Cisco advisory for the fixed version and apply it when it is available.Source: sec.cloudapps.cisco.com
Is it being exploited?
Yes. CISA added it to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2026-09-14, which means it has evidence of attacks. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cisa.gov, cve.now feed data
What if there's no patch?
The checked facts do not list a workaround. Follow the mitigation guidance in the Cisco advisory until a fixed release is installed.Source: sec.cloudapps.cisco.com
