Summary

FreeRDP, a remote desktop client library, and the xfreerdp X11 client are affected. A malicious remote desktop server can crash the client by sending a specially crafted display reset, causing a denial of service.

Read the original description

FreeRDP before 3.32.2 contains a NULL pointer dereference vulnerability that allows malicious RDP servers to crash xfreerdp clients by sending a zero-width RDPGFX ResetGraphics PDU. The failed resize in gdi_resize_ex leaves the primary display null without ending the session, so a later bitmap update crashes the client in gdi_Bitmap_Paint.

FAQ

Questions about CVE-2026-121402

Is CVE-2026-121402 being exploited?

It is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and CISA's SSVC assessment does not mark exploitation as active. That does not mean it has not been attacked: vendors and researchers can report attacks before CISA lists them. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cve.now feed data

What does this mean?

A malicious RDP server can send a ResetGraphics PDU with width zero, followed by a normal bitmap update, and this crashes a connected Linux xfreerdp client. The demonstrated impact is loss of client availability; no code execution or information disclosure was shown.Source: github.com, vulncheck.com

Which versions are affected by CVE-2026-121402?

FreeRDP: before 3.32.2.Source: cve.now feed data

Am I affected, and how do I check?

FreeRDP versions before 3.32.2 are affected, but only when the Linux xfreerdp X11 client is connected to a malicious RDP server that sends the zero-width ResetGraphics sequence. To check a version, run xfreerdp /version and compare the number with 3.32.2.Source: github.com, vulncheck.com

How do I fix CVE-2026-121402?

Upgrade FreeRDP to version 3.32.2 or later, which contains the fix. No other fixed versions are listed in the facts.Source: github.com, vulncheck.com
