Summary

FreeRDP, a widely used open-source Remote Desktop Protocol client library, is affected through its WinPR component's image-handling code. A malicious remote server or an attacker positioned between client and server can send a malformed image through the clipboard, causing the affected client application to crash or shut down.

Read the original description

FreeRDP before 3.32.2 contains a denial of service vulnerability in WinPR's winpr_read_png_from_buffer() and winpr_convert_from_jpeg(), which lack libpng/libjpeg error handling. A malicious RDP server or MITM can offer a malformed PNG or truncated JPEG clipboard payload, causing the client to abort or exit.

FAQ

Questions about CVE-2026-121386

Is CVE-2026-121386 being exploited?

It is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and CISA's SSVC assessment does not mark exploitation as active. That does not mean it has not been attacked: vendors and researchers can report attacks before CISA lists them. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cve.now feed data

What does this mean?

A malformed image in the clipboard format can crash the FreeRDP client during conversion in WinPR's image reader, ending the session. The impact described is denial of service.Source: github.com, vulncheck.com

Which versions are affected by CVE-2026-121386?

FreeRDP: before 3.32.2.Source: cve.now feed data

Am I affected, and how do I check?

FreeRDP versions before 3.32.2 are affected when built with the WINPR_UTILS_IMAGE_PNG or WINPR_UTILS_IMAGE_JPEG readers enabled, which the official packaging does. Builds using WITH_LODEPNG are not affected by the PNG case, and the bug needs the malformed image clipboard format to be used by the client.Source: github.com, vulncheck.com

How do I fix CVE-2026-121386?

Upgrade to 3.32.2 or later.Source: vulncheck.com
