Summary
Netpbm, a widely used collection of image conversion tools, is affected, specifically its picttoppm converter for Apple PICT image files. A specially crafted PICT file can overflow a memory buffer, causing the program to crash or potentially allowing an attacker to run arbitrary code.
Read the original description
Netpbm before 10.86.51, 11.x before 11.02.30, and 11.03 before 11.15.08 contains a stack-based buffer overflow in picttoppm's scanPoly() function in converter/ppm/picttoppm.c. Attackers can supply a crafted PICT file whose polygon edges produce more than 5000 points, overflowing the coord stack array to crash the converter or potentially execute code.

Questions about CVE-2026-120434
What does this mean?
picttoppm has a buffer overrun when it handles a PICT file containing very large polygons. The flaw is triggered by a crafted input file.Source: svn.code.sf.net
Am I affected, and how do I check?
Netpbm versions before 10.86.51, from 11.0 up to but not including 11.02.30, and from 11.03 up to but not including 11.15.08. Check the installed Netpbm version against these ranges, and note whether picttoppm is used to process PICT files.Source: svn.code.sf.net
What should I do about it?
Upgrade Netpbm to 10.86.51, 11.02.30, or 11.15.08, whichever matches your release line.Source: svn.code.sf.net
Is it being exploited?
It is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and CISA's SSVC assessment does not mark exploitation as active. That does not mean it has not been attacked: vendors and researchers can report attacks before CISA lists them. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cve.now feed data
