FreeSWITCH: Pre-authentication invalid pointer dereference in mod_rtmp connect command handling
Only deployments that build and load mod_rtmp are affected, and the module is disabled in the default build and configuration. Every released 1.10.x and 1.11.x version is affected. Fixed in 1.11.2.

Summary
FreeSWITCH, a software telecom switching stack, can be crashed by a remote attacker who sends a malformed RTMP connect command to an enabled mod_rtmp listener, without logging in. The resulting invalid memory read reliably takes down the process and ends all active calls, though no data theft or code execution has been demonstrated.
Read the original description
FreeSWITCH is a Software Defined Telecom Stack enabling the digital transformation from proprietary telecom switches to a software implementation that runs on any commodity hardware. Prior to 1.11.2, rtmp_i_connect() passed the first RTMP connect argument to amf0_object_get() without checking whether the AMF value was an object. A string or number in place of an AMF object caused union bytes from the message to be interpreted as node pointers and dereferenced. Any client with network access to an enabled mod_rtmp listener could send the malformed connect command before login; the module is disabled in the stock build and configuration. The invalid read reliably crashes FreeSWITCH and ends every active call, while no write, memory disclosure, or code execution has been demonstrated. This issue is fixed in version 1.11.2.

What to do
Check whether your setup matches what the bug needs.
Only deployments that build and load mod_rtmp are affected The mod_rtmp module is disabled in the default build and configuration Affects all released 1.10.x and 1.11.x versions, and current masterUpgrade to a fixed version: 1.11.2.
Workaround: Leave mod_rtmp unloaded unless RTMP client support is required, or restrict access to the RTMP port to trusted client networks at the firewall.

Questions about CVE-2026-116782
Is CVE-2026-116782 being exploited?
It is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and CISA's SSVC assessment does not mark exploitation as active. That does not mean it has not been attacked: vendors and researchers can report attacks before CISA lists them. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cve.now feed data
What does this mean?
A single malformed RTMP connect command, sent without logging in, can fault the FreeSWITCH process on an unmapped address. That crash ends every call the instance is handling, not only the sender's connection. Memory disclosure and code execution have not been demonstrated.Source: github.com, github.com
Which versions are affected by CVE-2026-116782?
freeswitch: before 1.11.2.Source: cve.now feed data
Am I affected, and how do I check?
Every released 1.10.x and 1.11.x version is affected, as is current master, but only where mod_rtmp is built and loaded. The module is commented out in both the default module build list and the default modules.conf.xml, so check whether mod_rtmp is listed as loaded in your modules.conf.xml.Source: github.com, github.com
How do I fix CVE-2026-116782?
Upgrade to FreeSWITCH 1.11.2, which the advisory says is the fixed version, and upgrade as soon as possible. If you cannot upgrade right away, see the workaround guidance.Source: github.com, github.com
