Summary
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: vxlan: Fix NPD when refreshing an FDB entry with a nexthop object VXLAN FDB entries can point to either a remote destination or an FDB nexthop group. The latter is usually used in EVPN deployments where learning is disabled. However, when learning is enabled, an incoming packet might try to refresh an FDB entry that points to an FDB nexthop group and therefore does not have a remote. Such packets should be dropped, but they are only dropped after dereferencing the non-existent remote, resulting in a NPD [1] which can be reproduced using [2]. Fix by dropping such packets earlier. Remove the misleading comment from first_remote_rcu(). Questions about CVE-2025-39851
What does this mean?
An incoming packet can cause a VXLAN device to refresh an FDB entry that points to a nexthop group, where there is no remote destination to use. The kernel then dereferences a NULL pointer and can crash.Source: git.kernel.org
Am I affected, and how do I check?
Affected are Linux kernel versions 5.8.0 up to 6.6.160, 6.7.0 up to 6.12.46, and 6.13.0 up to 6.16.6, and only when VXLAN learning is enabled and an FDB entry points to an FDB nexthop group. To check, run uname -r for the kernel version and ip -d link show to see whether a VXLAN device has learning enabled.Source: git.kernel.org
What should I do about it?
Update the kernel to a fixed release: 6.6.160 on the 6.6 branch, 6.12.46 on the 6.12 branch, or 6.16.6 on the 6.16 branch, or a later version.Source: git.kernel.org
Is it being exploited?
It is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and CISA's SSVC assessment does not mark exploitation as active. That does not mean it has not been attacked: vendors and researchers can report attacks before CISA lists them. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cve.now feed data
