Summary

Read the original description

Minio is a Multi-Cloud Object Storage framework. Prior to RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z, an attacker can use crafted requests to bypass metadata bucket name checking and put an object into any bucket while processing `PostPolicyBucket`. To carry out this attack, the attacker requires credentials with `arn:aws:s3:::*` permission, as well as enabled Console API access. This issue has been patched in RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z. As a workaround, enable browser API access and turn off `MINIO_BROWSER=off`.

FAQ

Questions about CVE-2023-28434

What does this mean?

A credential with arn:aws:s3:::* permission can bypass the metadata bucket name checks and write an object into any bucket, including reserved system buckets. That write can lead to privilege escalation.Source: github.com

Am I affected, and how do I check?

Affected are MinIO builds older than RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z, and Go module builds older than 0.0.0-202303200415. The bug needs Console API access enabled and a credential with arn:aws:s3:::* permission. To check a setup, compare the release timestamp shown by the MinIO version command with the fixed release, and check whether Console API access is enabled.Source: github.com

What should I do about it?

Upgrade MinIO to RELEASE.2023-03-20T20-16-18Z or later. The advisory's workaround is to keep Browser API access on and set MINIO_BROWSER=off.Source: github.com

Is it being exploited?

Yes. CISA added it to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2023-09-19, which means it has evidence of attacks. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cisa.gov, cve.now feed data
