Read the original description

NUUO NVRmini2 through 3.11 allows an unauthenticated attacker to upload an encrypted TAR archive, which can be abused to add arbitrary users because of the lack of handle_import_user.php authentication. When combined with another flaw (CVE-2011-5325), it is possible to overwrite arbitrary files under the web root and achieve code execution as root.

FAQ

Questions about CVE-2022-23227

What does this mean?

An unauthenticated attacker can upload an encrypted TAR archive to the device, and that archive can be abused to add arbitrary users. Chained with the BusyBox tar directory traversal (CVE-2011-5325), the facts describe unauthenticated remote code execution as root.Source: github.com

Am I affected, and how do I check?

Every publicly released NUUO NVRmini2 firmware up to and including 03.11.0000.0016 is listed as affected. To check a device, compare its installed firmware version against 03.11.0000.0016.Source: github.com

What should I do about it?

The checked facts do not name a fixed firmware version or an upgrade target. Check the vendor's channels for an updated firmware release for the NVRmini2.Source: github.com

Is it being exploited?

Yes. CISA added it to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2024-12-18, which means it has evidence of attacks. No public exploit code is tracked.Source: cisa.gov, cve.now feed data

What if there's no patch?

The checked facts do not list a workaround or mitigation. Until a fix is confirmed, limit access to the device's network interface, since the flaw is reachable without authentication.Source: github.com
